Air Beijing

olympicgames | July 11, 2008

With a month remaining before the Beijing Olympics, the International Olympic Committee praised the city’s preparations but also cited one “open issue” that remain: whether the city can deliver good air quality.Meanwhile, environmental officials are focused on delivering blue skies, despite recent weeks that have brought unusual amounts of rain mixed with haze. Mr. Verbruggen said local officials briefed the I.O.C. delegation about the city’s contingency plans to improve air quality during the Games by temporarily closing factories in much of northern China and also restricting automobile traffic in Beijing. Beijing officials point to reductions in certain air pollutants and say the city has made measurable progress, even as they agree that more needs to be done. But independent analysts have questioned claims of progress. Earlier this year, Jacques Rogge, the I.O.C. president, cautioned that Beijing might need to postpone the marathon and other endurance events if air quality did not meet certain standards.

Beijing Projection

olympicgames | June 6, 2008

In order to celebrate and promote the upcoming 2008 Olympic in Beijing, Nike stepped up to the plate big time, literally, by projecting images of some of China’s greatest athletes onto the sides of the new CCTV government building in Beijing. Designed by Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, the building represents China’s rapid progress and its bright future. Nike chose the perfect medium for this campaign as it showcases China’s athleticism with a very symbolic backdrop.

Vision Beijing

olympicgames | May 6, 2008

Patrice Leconte, a French movie maker was asked by the Chinese government to shoot a promotion ad called “Vision Beijing”.

Far from the sports community and the political stress before the games, Leconte did a very lyrical and neutral movie.
The Chinese government tries to show the best image they can. The French director forgot to show the 1989 Tiananmen events, to talk about the Human rights, the press and the pollution. He also confirmed that the movie was pure propaganda.

Steven Spielberg walked out of his supervisor job. He was supposed to help the BOCOG doing the opening ceremony. Since the Schindler’s List, Spielberg tries to make humanist and political movies. Leconte, him, did not follow Godard’s advice “The point is not to make political movies, but to make movie politically”
Four other film makers participated in the event: the British Daryl Goodrich, the Hong-kongese Andrew Lau Wai-Keung, the Iranian Majid Majidi and the Italian Giuseppe Tornatore.
